Workshop on innovative qualitative methods in migration research
On 22 May, Middlesex University is organising a hybrid workshop on innovative qualitative methods in migration research in London, United Kingdom. Drawing from examples from the DYNAMIG project, as well as from our sister project AspirE, the workshop will showcase a variety of innovative qualitative methods employed in migration research and reflect on the methodological challenges and opportunities they present.
Background
Migration studies have increasingly embraced a diverse array of innovative and critical qualitative methods to gain deeper, more nuanced insights into the lived experiences of migrants and refugees. Researchers are moving beyond traditional approaches to explore the complex social, spatial and temporal dynamics of migration, as well as how individuals and communities navigate, adapt to and reshape the environments they encounter. From participatory and arts-based practices to digital storytelling and geospatial mapping, these methods help illuminate how migrants use, perceive and engage with places and facilities in ways that are deeply contextual and evolving.
This workshop showcases a range of innovative qualitative methods used in recent migration research, highlighting how these approaches have been developed and applied in practice, along with the methodological challenges and opportunities they present. Aimed at postgraduate students and researchers from diverse disciplines, the session offers insights into how such methods can enrich understandings of mobility and displacement – whether used alongside quantitative approaches or to deepen existing qualitative inquiry. Participants will hear directly from researchers reflecting on their field experiences and methodological innovations.
